In Palermo, one of the areas richest in history is certainly the Kalsa, its name comes from the Arabic "Khalisa” - "The Elected", because this was the area where the Arabic Prince used to live. You can experience the Oriental atmosphere while walking through it's small alleys with its monuments of Arab-Norman origin.
Today the Kalsa is a very vibrant area with many cultural gems. It's an exciting and lively area, with many hand craft and art shops. It is often the place that hosts cultural events and music festivals. During your tour, you will discover many of the areas secrets from a local perspective. Starting from Villa Garibaldi in Piazza Marina, a most elegant part of the city, you will take a historical journey through Palazzo Steri and learn of life during Spanish rule and the inquisition.
Following this, you will cross through one of the ancient city gates and the city walls of the “Cattive” and here you will find yourself amongst some spectacular murals and atmospheric alleyways.
Before ending our tour we will stop at MadonEat, a typical Madonite-inspired Bio Bistrot where we will try 3 of the best and most famous Sicilian wines accompanied by tasty and genuine local products.
We will conclude our visit to Piazza Magione, a most symbolic landmark in the city, not only as it is a popular location for young people to gather, but also due to its fame as the birthplace of the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
It's most recommended to cross the Kalsa during sunset, in order to fully experience a wonderful atmosphere!
