Undiscovered Sicily…

Spring is almost there and it’s time to start again with some trips out of town along the Sicilian island. Sicily it’s famous for its beautiful beaches and unexplored places, immersed in the nature and mesmerising landscapes.

CityXcape suggests four different lakes to visit and for which it is worth exploring the midland that hosts them.

Arancio Lake:

It is an artificial lake built between 1949 and 1952, located in the territories of Sambuca di Sicilia, with an area of 400 hectares.

For several years it has been managed by the Lipu – Italian League for Birds , as it represents a seasonal destination for various species of migratory birds. The best time to visit it is certainly at the beginning of September, as the colours of the surroundings vineyards and mountains make the landscape even more beautiful. The oasis has also an area equipped with stone tables and chairs, bamboo cane houses and a barbecue area, perfect for spending a day with friends and trying excellent local products.

Lake of Piana degli Albanesi:

This is the oldest lake in the Sicilian basin. It extends over a naturalistic area of 350 hectares in the territory of Piana degli Albanesi. In 1999 the lake became a WWF oasis for the protection of the natural heritage. The site, which denotes a certain fauna and flora importance, is very well-kept and it is the ideal place to spend a day in total relax. Furthermore, it is a perfect destination for various sports activities such as canoe, horse riding, cycling and jogging.

The small lakes of Marinello di Tindari:

It is a natural reserve made up of four little indipendent lakes. What particularly characterizes them are the warm and clear waters.

The beach that surrounds them has free access and it has made of sand dunes. Close to Tindari there is also the equipped beach of Oliveri, where with 5 euros only you can join a boat excursion along the reserve. Here you can spend the whole day passing from one point to the other point of the lakes. Here you can also enjoy a nice meal in one of the local restaurants close to the camping area.

For those who are searching the adventure it’s possible to reach the lakes taking a walk immersed in the nature. It only takes about thirty minutes.

The lakes of Avola:

Located close to Syracuse they represent the main attraction of the Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Reserve – characterised by a canyon of small lakes.

The lakes are set along the Iblei Mountains, defined as a naturalistic, archaeological and anthropological heritage. For this reason, they are not accessible and are closed to the public. What makes them so suggestive it is its tiring path that has to be walked to reach them. In fact, it is recommended only for those who are trained in trekking activities.

Although this path is temporarily inaccessible, there is still a way to enter unspoiled nature: the Prisa Carrubella path, which is open to the public and can be easily walked. The route lasts about two and a half hours and allows us to reach another small lake, suitable for swimming, which has very fresh and clean waters seven meters deep. At the edges of the lake there is a rich vegetation, typical of the Mediterranean area.
