Mount Etna dominates the landscape of Eastern Sicily. At 3329 m it is the largest active volcano in Europe. It is in an almost constant state of activity and eruptions occur frequently. Since 1987 the volcano and its scope have been part of the National park “ Parco dell’Etna”. The southern slope is the most accessible gateway and here, guided by the tour guide , it will be possible to get up to 1900 m by bus up to the crater area Rifugio Sapienza, a small cluster of shops and bars. Starting from here there are various options for heading up towards 3000 m by cable-car . Note that in windy weather the cable – car service is suspended and replaced by a minibus. There are four craters at the top and how close one can get depends on the level of volcanic activity.
